Casa Malaparte, Island of Capri, Italy
Adalberto Libera and Curzio Malaparte, 1937-1942
Casa Malaparte sits on a rocky peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean, miles from civilization. Perched 99 steps above the waves, it is accessible by boat only when the sea is calm. Writer Curzio Malaparte wished to live apart from bourgeois society, and he would spend hours atop his windswept patio contemplating his writing. After his death, the house was abandoned. Its dramatic staircase was later featured in Godard’s moody 1963 film, Contempt, with Brigitte Bardot.
“Today I live on an island in a harsh, melancholy, and severe house which I have built alone lonesome on a cliff hanging over the sea.” – Curzio Malaparte
